My continental giant, Esme had this problem last winter on the skin on her rump - histology on biopsies was inconclusive but

Re: Rabbit skin tearing

Yes, I think steroids wouldn't be all that a good an idea at the moment!

Yes I think I would steer clear of steroids - rabbits and steroids not a good combination and arent they meant to cause skin thinning anyway? Good luck with it all.
They have a heater in their inside compartment and they are now being shut in their overnight instead of having access to go outside through their dogflap as I think that isn't helping the situation. She has 3 tears at the minute but all have already scabbed over...thanks again for your help.

She was always worst at the start of the cold season eg Nov/Dec time and did ease off a little as time went on. Im sorry I cant help more, I know how devastating this condition is. I cannot remember treating many of my rabbits tears with antibiotics as they just didnt seem to get infected, just pain relief as and when. She may not like being handled as people with the condition claim even touch can be very painful - my rabbit did not tolerate handling and I believe this was a possibility with her. To help keep mine warm she had a few snugglesafe pads which she did choose to lie on. Best of luck with her. I know its hard but mine did leave a happy life and lived till 8 years old. If I can help at all let me know.

Re: Rabbit skin tearing

Thanks everyone for your replies and help and hi Cary's!

Prob is a type of ehlers danlos symdrome but as biopsies are normally inconclusive (as they were last year) and treatment is aimed at management and prevention, then the outcome is really the same with or without a definate diagnosis....
