I am looking to do some travelling and working in the UK as a Vet Nurse this September (2009) for 6 months to a year. Would anyone know or have any advice on whether I can work with the credentials

Re: Registered Vet Tech from Canada wants to work in UK

link to bvna

As far as I am aware your qualification should stand you in good stead..A friend of mine has just done the reverse and is working in Vancouver..she has found the main difference is drug regines and names plus terminology . The RCVS will be able to advise you but also you may find the BVNA ( British Veterinary Nursing Association) helpful, they are our represntative body whilst the RCVS are our governing body. The BVNA will also be able to provide you with links / contact for the IVNTA ( International Veterinary Nurses & Technicians Association) who are able to provide direct info on working in other countries and what qualifications are appropriate where. They are actively involved in encouraging links between countries and making it easier for vet vetchs and vn's to travel between them. The BVNA website has a link and might be a good first port of call.

Whilst I agree that currently there is less locum work aroubd, this is largely due to practices tightening their purse strings due to the curent economic climate. However, there are still full time positions available as well as some temporary maternity cover ( etc.,) places that tend to prove less popular with regular UK locums but that may be suitable.

Whilst I am glad someone has had a positive experience with Rigg Veterinary Recruitment I have to say I am in agreement with many of the nurses on this site that I have encountered far more nightmare stoires ( directly expereince and told in the first person..not rumour) than I have postive ones. I am glad that someone is able to provide good experinces of themn but my advice would be to avoid them as I know too many people whp have had their fingers burnt by working for them. However everything does come down to personal choice.

I would , however, recommend, Carlton Professional who you can Google . They are very efficient and helpful. Also the Northern Locum Agency I have had good experiences with. Both will send regular email updates of positions available and pay on time and reasonably. Also the latter, despite their name, do cover the whole of the UK and not just the North.

Best of luck with your enquiries and we hope to see you soon !

Re: Registered Vet Tech from Canada wants to work in UK

I would definitely get in contact with the RCVS, they will be able to tell you if your qualification is ok to work here or not. They will also be able to tell you if you need to sit an extra exams before you come over, or when you come over.

I have worked with Nurses from overseas, and some have the relevant qualification, while some have to do a bit extra.

Good luck.

Re: Registered Vet Tech from Canada wants to work in UK

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]
