Basically advocating not getting annual boosters done as vets are over vaccinating to rip people off and the vaccines are full of crap and do more harm than good.
Just curious as

Re: Dr Becker/vaccine junkie?

That was another point I made in the debate - that until the data sheets say differently, vets can only be guided by them and if they made up their own protocol and anything went wrong, they wouldn't have the backing of the large pharmaceutical companies. I also added that it takes time and intensive trials and proof before the pharmaceutical companies can change the data sheets, which obviously can't happen overnight as we're talking about long term effects and therefore long term studies in this case. I think some people just don't realise the legal procedures involved in all this stuff so are quick to jump on the bandwagon and place blame and shout "moneygrabbers" etc when it's really out of vets' hands in the main.

Anyway, I've dropped out of the debate now as the particular forum where it has taken place is policed a little too heavily for my liking and two of my posts have been removed for being "innapporpriate". Personally, I think they just don't like anyone with too much inside info or actual reasonable facts on there and would rather joe public rant and go round in circles but I refuse to have a discussion where I don't have freedom of speech (and I'm not talking about bad language or personal insults, just various opinions from a veterinary viewpoint).

Re: Dr Becker/vaccine junkie?

We use Purevax & they do advise panleuc component every 3rd yr

Re: Dr Becker/vaccine junkie?
Not seen him, off to have a nosey, I imagine some of our clients have though as I have puppy owners asking me if vaccines cause cancer....but have you read the vaccine reccomendation guidelines by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association?

http://www.wsava.org/VGG1.htm scroll down and click on vaccine guidelines 2010.

Basically, we should vaccinate more animals less of the time, if a animal misses a booster but had its primary puppy/kitten course it doesn't need to start the course again, and we should be given puppies/kittens a course of 3 initial vaccinations with the last at 16weeks of age or later due to maternally derived antibodies still sticking around. Makes a lot of sense, vets are just starting to get on board with vaccinating less with doing the full core vaccines for dogs and cats just every 3 years.

I know vets and vaccine companies are just trying to be cautious - but is it in the best interests of our pets? I'm no way saying we shouldn't vaccinate, but the vaccine guidelines make a lot more sense to me than the way we do things at the moment
I was discussing this with one of our vets last week and it does sound like a move in the right direction but vets still have to follow the protocols in the vaccine data sheets. As these still state vaccinating every year for some components thats what our vets will continue to do. Seems mad when there is evidence that shows vaccinating less often still provides sufficient cover.

Re: Dr Becker/vaccine junkie?

Our vets do something different with vaccs now i think, rather than full each time...not sure what though. Sorry pointless post!

Re: Dr Becker/vaccine junkie?

Hiya Carol

hope things are going well with you!

From the kitty side of things, we have altered our vaccination regime slightly especially in light of advice from Martha Cannon & www.abcd-vets.org so panleuc & felv not vaccinated against every year but every 3rd (I think!). I think they also advise that if a cat hasn't been vacc for a couple of yrs then a single booster is sufficient. Personally love that idea but not sure how easy it would be to convince catteries!

Then if their dog wasn't immune, they'd still have to pay for vaccs so they'd probably be maoning that they now had to pay for an annual blood test in addition to boosters

I did ask how many of them had witnessed puppies (or dogs of any age come to that) spending several days in agony, basically dying of dehydration from puking and pooping, attached to a drip blah blah blah and had to support owners who were begging them to do something to save their baby when a simple vaccination could have prevented it. Oddly, no one replied to that.

They were also going on about over vaccination causing auto immune disease, which to be fair, it amy well do, I'm no authority on the subject (hence me asking if anyone else was on here!) but how many cases of auto immune disease do we realistically see, or have I just been lucky in seeing very few?

Their other argument was that we shouldn't wait until its too late ie when studies have been completed and the protocols changed in the light of medical problems arising. It was likened to thalidamide etc when people reacted and the effects were seen years later but the oppostite side of the coin as I see it is the whole measles/autism thing and people deciding not to vaccinate out of fear and thinkinbg measles is very rare anyway but the only reason it's rare is due to being eradicated by vaccination and now we're apparntley seeing more serious cases of it again.

And by the way, before anyone jumps on me, these are not my opinions of measles vaccinations, just throwing in another way of looking at it. I have no kids and therefore no strong views either way Really just curious as to what other educated bods thoughts might be...

Re: Dr Becker/vaccine junkie?

Oh yes definitely! Go on any pet forum and vets are evil, money hungry, and know nothing!! The amount of people that don't trust vet advice!! ARGH.

The vaccine guidelines are keen to emphasise it should be a yearly HEALTH CHECK, and the vaccination given if necessary, but it is the health check they are paying for...but people pick out the bits they want to hear and ignore the rest.

Got into the whole "have you any idea how much overheads, staff wages etc cost" and "would you object if your lawyer or washing machine repair man charged a call out/consultation fee for their expertise and service?" in response to the question of why the vets buys the vaccine at a couple of quid and charges £30 for it.
