This was the first case we had diagnosed here and she is doing very well now with no recurrence of bleeding. I guess it is early days yet but she is bright and happy and we have strongly recommended regular routine worming, monthly advocate as a preventative and retesting faeces in a few months to be sure it has cleared up. Fingers crossed

Re: treatment of Angiostrongulus Vasorum

Hi,

We have been treating dog for Angio for the past two weeks. Initially presented with haem from mouth with no point of origin. We treated with steroids, Vit K inj and advocate. Baermann's came back positive. We have also treated with Milbemax.

The dog came in today with epixstasis. Was adv by Bayer Tech helpline to hosp dog as a matter of urgency, but dog v BAR.

They also adv Panacur 50mg/kg for 10 days and rept Baermans test. We have repeated blood tests for clotting factors, etc. Have also asked lab to carry out test D-Dimers (I think that was what it was called).

We await the results.

Re: treatment of Angiostrongulus Vasorum

We also use panacur, starting at a low dose then increasing, if a heavy burden is suspected.

We have found Advocate too strong for treatment and have actually found it makes them more sick as it kills them off too quickly. Panacur we've found better as you can lower the dose and do it gradually

Re: treatment of Angiostrongulus Vasorum

we use fenbendazole (panacur) at a dose of 50mg/kg for 5 days when we suspect lungworm

Re: treatment of Angiostrongulus Vasorum

We've seen 3 CASES of A.vasorum this year!!!! we strongly advice our clients to buy advocate as it treats & prevents lung worm when used every month.. also, as we've had a few cases we routinely take blood from all dogs that come in for surgery (spay's/castrates) BEFORE we start.. no extra charage to the client.. if the blood fails to clot in a few minutes then the vet prefers to hold off on the op.. send doggy home on advocate and re schedule the procedure - just to be safe

Re: treatment of Angiostrongulus Vasorum

Thankyou for your reply. I use advocate regularly for my own puppy (6mths old now) as she comes to work with me and has a thing for snails in the garden - urck! but am also even more glad about using it now as the dog in question was in my care for the weekend and came into contact with her a few times.

I am replying on behalf of Bayer Animal Health who manufacture Advocate. Advocate is the licensed treatment option for Angiostrongylus vasorum in the UK. If you feel you would like to go down the route of using Advocate for this condition, the product's SPC states that 'A single dose should be administered. A further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended as some animals may require a second treatment.' Advocate has also recently received a license indication for preventing Angiostrongylus vasorum when used monthly. This may be an option if you are concerned that the dog in question could become reinfected when sent back home. Please ring the Bayer technical advice line if you would like us to offer any more assistance on 0845 1305995
