Hi all sorry only getting on this now to give you's an update on the elkhound!! Good news is that the whelps are drying up and dont look as inflammed. Got results back from idexx and they feel that it is more than likely linked to an adverse drug reaction.

Sorry but i forgot to say that the dog was actually on AB 3 days prior to surgery!! thankfully she is well on the mend, and she is alot happier and away home

Bengalcat - I am allergic to trimethoprim sulphonamides too. Had all the same symptoms - amazing rash isn't it? But I was only about 12 so mum panicked and sent for the GP thinking I was going to expire......he wasn't too chuffed to do a home visit for what turned out to be an allergic reaction. Got me out of school for a few days though!
I know, amazing rash! Scary how quick it was too. Got signed off for a week off work, worst thing was I'd seen some work collegues at a night out on the saturday. Was convinced they'd never believe me! Had already ahd 1 week off with the kidney infection, now a rash? lol! My doc had me come as a late appointment as I was worried it was contagious. I've had measles twice now, thought it was a third time (my uncles had it 6 times!)

Re: Major Drug Reaction

Hi all sorry only getting on this now to give you's an update on the elkhound!!
I just kinda glanced at the 1st and 2nd post then wrote my comment. Was meant to be a mean old pokey comment

Re: Major Drug Reaction
You have to be exposed to something to build an allergy, for exaple, I had a urinary infection, all was fine with the IV antibiotics, and I want home on oral meds 3/4 days later, after 5 days, I started to have a reaction.
I know you have to be exposed to gain an allergy, my point was the length of time between what would have been the end of a course of ab's and the start of the urticaria, seems highly unlikely to be the abs in this case

Re: Major Drug Reaction
bearing in mind it allergy could have come from any source l would like to know more about who decided it was a reaction to the drug what was done and who informed.

And urticaria is hardly a major reaction
I agree with this!! thats why i asked .....to me a normal course of ab's is a week, the pyo was a few weeks ago and has only just developed reaction???? hardlyu likely to be the ab's

Oh and like you said Caro urticaria is not really a major reaction!!!

Re: Major Drug Reaction

I had a similar reaction to erythromycin once. They only thing that was different was the medication. I started with some red spots (looked menangitis like) and itching, which spread over a couple of hours and looked like measles and ended up as an all-over body rash. Looked like I'd been sandwiched between 2 radiators! Was so weak it took me 10mins to get to the taxi outside my house to take me to the docs. Was not nice. At least I know to avoid the drug in future. Trymethaprime it was, not an uncommon drug to be allergic to I'm told.

I agree, report to the VMD and the drug company. Hope the poor dog is better soon.

Re: Major Drug Reaction

sorry but what led you to believe it was a drug reaction, surely she would have finished the course of ab's prior to the reaction???
