Do you snap the blades into place with the motor running after cleaning? This is often what causes them to go out of alignment.
Are you supposed to snap the blade onto the clipper whilst its running or before its running. im confused. we have similar problems as cat woman but just send the blades off to be re-sharpened but we have about 10 in circulation so hard to keep track which ones are which
It does depend on the make of clippers, but most state in the instructions (including OSTER) that the blades should be snapped down whist the motor is running, but check if you have a different make/model. When we were having problems with our blades, we contacted a sharpening company to ask, and he said that most "non cutting" problems were due to them being out of alignment rather than being blunt - majority due to incorrect usage. It is also part of the handwashing OSCE (although not stated) to snap the blades in place whilst it is running.

if you look on the back of your clipper blades on the baseplate near the screws you will see a series of letters. have an index card for each blade and a box for your index cards and as each blade is shapened mark the date down on the relevant card and put it to the back of the box - also note any comments ie shear ease will tell you if the blade is knackered or coming to the end of its life, that way if you have a blade that is past its best you can decide whether to bother with sharpening or just go for replacement. Make sure to make a note also of why blade is u/s ie is it being sent off for not cutting hair or dragging skin etc. If it is dragging skin it usually means there is at least 1 tooth missing and is probably better replaced.

Keep doing this as each blade gets sharpened and then you know exactly where you are with blades. (if you have blades with the same letters than either use an engraving pen or a blob of nail varnish where it wont rub off to differentiate) Do the same with your clippers if you have more than one noting the service date and comments.

I could account for about 50 sets of blades this way and over 10 sets of clippers - takes a bit to set up if you have loads of them but well worth it

Re: Problems with Oster Clipper Blades

we use a #50 blade for g,pigs, rabbits and cat fur, really clips well. with the oster clippers

Re: Problems with Oster Clipper Blades
We have a couple of oster clippers. Electric ones & cordless. At the moment, we have 4 blades in use (2 of which came back from the sharpeners last week). Why won't they cut cats fur?! Its starting to really annoy me! They seem to clip dog hair fine, but cat hair no. Its like trying to clip through honey. Even if the blade is taken off & cleaned thoroughly & sprayed with clipper spray, we still have the same problem. I am going to lose my rag & throw them soon!.

I was going to say the same thing, although with it being a part of one of the OSCEs tasks most people should be aware of it.

Saying that, I dont think vets get similar training, as I have seen them 'clean' clipper blades in water, and then snap the blades back on before the clippers are running.

I agree with Karen, if you have another pair to tide you over for a week or so, send the actual clipper body off too as there can sometimes be something slightly out of line in the motor?

Although it's gonna cost you a bomb to post them...!
