With the circle circuit, as its closed it's obviously hard to adjust the levels of volatile agent quickly during anaesthesia.
What is the quickest way to reduce depth of anaesthesia with a circle?? For example if the patient went a bit

Re: Circle circuit question

no worries

Re: Circle circuit question

Aghhh!
I meant no offense by my comment. I went to read it and couldn't find it so when I found it thought I would mention it. Quite frankly the website design makes it quite difficult to be accurate with those menus that drop down when you hover over them.

Boogle there is a pretty good website that has animations showing how the circuits work etc you need to go to the resources section and its under clinical anaesthesia.

That makes sense. I was taught to squeeze the bag, but didn't think that was quite right. Makes much more sense to alter the flow rate accordingly.

The circle should ALWAYS be run as a semi closed system, so the APL valve should be at least half open.

The reason it can take so long to adjust depth, is because of the low flow rates. If you want to initiate a change quickly, just up the O2 level a few litres - at least 1.5 x minute volume if not more. This will mean that the gas is flushed through the system quicker, and the new iso/sevo levels will stabilise within the circuit quicker.

There should be no need to empty the bag, as this will upset the dynamics of the circuit.

Re: Circle circuit question

that wont change the anaesthetic depth any quicker though.....to speed up delivery of the gas you need to increase your flow rate in order for it to be carried round the system quicker.I only ever touch the bag if i am disconnecting the circuit-then i will empty the bag of its contents or if i am having to deliver a breath to the patient.Shouldnt be a need to empty the reservior bag when changing depth as the circuit then needs to reload itself.

Re: Circle circuit question

I was taught when upping or downing the iso (or other agent) when you have adjusted it to squeeze the bag to expel the prior dosage, so that the animal gets the revised dosage faster.

Re: Circle circuit question

The circle should never be run as a closed system - so unsure what you are referring to here?

To increase/decrease anaesthetic depth can be achieved quite quickly - i wouldnt recommend you turn off the vaporiser to adjust anaesthetic depth as its quite likely you will end up having the dog jumping off the table!

To adjust anaesthetic depth simply reduce the setting on the vaporiser and you can increase your flow rate to get a quicker depth change.
