meanwhile tst strips have appeared in practice and seem to be working well!

Brownes tubes are good too! And I have not heard anything about them being discontinued, but then we don't use them at work. It would be a shame is they were no longer available!

Again from what I learnt at college, I thought Brownes tubes were the 'gold standard' as it were? With TST strips being a very very close second, and BD tape falling at the first hurdle - lol!

I am so stealing a strip of BD tape to hold over my boiling kettle

Re: brownes tubes

yep I know BD tape is just temperature dependant and nothing else but in the absence of brownes tubes or anything else it at least gave us some indication that at some stage a good temp had been reached right in the middle of the kit - pressure was irrelevant. We later changed to tst strips which it appears from the replies on this thread was also wrong. I thought Brownes tubes had been discontinued a considerable time ago?

Re: brownes tubes

Ok Sal, I'll be the first Although I may be wrong too!

BUT - I have been lead to believe that you can get BD tape to change colour over a boiling kettle, and that it is basically useless when trying to determine sterilisation. (Must try this asap lol!)

HOWEVER - I have just about diddly squat experience with hot air ovens and how they work...........

I was also taught that Brownes tubes are just as good as TST strips, as they are also sensitive to temperature, time and pressure

Re: brownes tubes

this is probably very wrong? and I would imagine a lot of people will let me know it is wrong - but what we ended up doing in one place I worked was sticking a piece of BD tape onto a small piece disposable drape and packing it in the middle of the kit. If the tape changed then we deemed the kit safe to use if it had been processed at the right temp for the right time.

As I say probably very wrong but it worked for us with no problems.

Re: brownes tubes

i assume you are using them in a hot air oven?? (we used to)

if not then tst strips as suggested above

We use TST strips which are slightly better for standard autoclaves as they react to all 3 componants, temp, steam and time

you can get them from NVS
