BUT - we have an RVN at work who has been in charge of inpatients all week, including

Re: problems at work...

I probably went through this once or twice myself, me being the person that doesnt get all the work down, but generally the patients dont suffer just paperwork. This happens to me when i am feeling down and a little depressed. So maybe just warn your boss etc not to go in all guns blazing. I think this staff member would benefit with a little help as it seems to be a lot of work.

I hope this helps

P.s. it can be a hard time dealing with depressing and trying to be a good nurse at the same time. I feel that you need to be 100% yourself before helping others.

Re: problems at work...

We deal with a lot of inpatients on our own when on wards... there is a sole nurse, but if there are a lot of intense nursing cases, then there is usually someone to lend a hand. Also have you got a treatment board sheet etc, where all the inptients can be written on and all medication amounts and times can be seen at a glance? we do this with all inpatients, that way we know who is due what and when, and it never leaves the ward nurses side that way nothing is missed, and if you get caught up, you can shout on someone to either medicate feed etc if you happen to be busy with another inpatient.Oh and forgot to say,the ward nurse always puts on the costs each morning, taken from the hospitalisation sheets, that way nothjing is missed either....it is done once a day in the morning, then the following day you look back the sheet if it has a c next to it it means it has been charged, so you move onto the meds that dont have a c

Re: problems at work...

Sorry but I would agree with what has been said already. Has anybody spoken to this nurse, not just about her apparent lack of work, but as Sal mentioned there could be something underlying that has put her off track over the week?

Also agree that for most practices where there might only be one ward nurse, that is quite a lot of cases. If she feels her work is being picked at she may be less likely to ask for help.

Re: problems at work...

I agree Finnigan, that sounds like a massive case load for just one person to be involved with.... also where are the vets??? Should they not also be checking that stuff is priced up as it's needed and helping with treatment plans and following up with checks to ensure animal is responding as they want them to?

It does seem an awful lot for one person to have the responsibility of - RVN or not... Is the HVN not helping her?

Re: problems at work...

may have got this all wrong, but is she having to look after all these on her own!! can someone not help her?? if we have more than 3 in patients in we all lend a hand, with their treatment and writing up putting on charges to help evryone out, wouldnt expect just one of my colleagues to struggle with this amount on their own!!!! maybe some teamwork!!!

Re: problems at work...

has anybody actually said to her that they are worried about her? - not worried about her work. Its more likely somebody will get to the bottom of the problem using this approach. (apologies if its already been tried)People can get very defensive and feel very threatened if they are told their work isnt up to scratch. - just as an aside is the stray cat area a quiet area with not too much traffic - if this person is struggling and feels things are getting on top of her she may subconsciously be seeking to work in a quieter area (withdrawing from areas of hustle and bustle because they add to her disquiet - which may just happen to be with the stray cats?

Is this person depressed?
