What does a Phaco handpiece do? I've googled it but cant find much.

[/quote]

It's used to perform phacoemulsification. Basically treatment of cataracts.

We used Ethylene oxide regulary so would always make sure items were dry and aerated as standard procedure , again I don't think I was clear enough with my explanation.

Re: Phaco handpiece

Check with the manufacturer.

All lumens should be flushed with distilled water immediately after surgery. There are machines to do this or just use a syringe and tubing. Leaving the used phaco needle attached in place until after flushing will allow you to generate more pressure and clean more effectively.

It is generally NOT recommended to use an ultrasonic cleaner as this may damage the Peizo electric crystals in the handpiece.

Most handpieces are designed to be steam autoclaved at 134 deg C 3 mins in a porous cycle. Flash sterilisation isn't recommended as air removal from the lumens will be difficult. 134 deg C causes considerably less damage to the handpiece than 121 deg. Ethylene oxide is an alternative but you would need to ensure that the handpieces are thoroughly dried and aerated post exposure.

Most handpieces are safe to be passed through a washer disinfector with the correct attachments as part of the cleaning cycle.

Re: Phaco handpiece

We used to put them through the ultrasonic cleaner after flushing all the attachments through with water. To sterilise use ethylene oxide, you can autoclave on a 121 setting if needed urgently, but try not to do this often as its not good for the handpiece.

Hope this helps?

Re: Phaco handpiece

i uese to do this years ago, the old grey matter is fading
