Hi there all

VPIS has had very few cases of reported ingestions of cucumber by hamsters or, indeed, other rodents. There appear to be no reports of significant toxicity arising from ingestion in the peer-reviewed published literature.

I would agree with the general comments about moderation.

As Paracelsus is widely reported to have commented - there is nothing that is not poisonous, it is just the dose that determines whether something is toxic. (I'm not translating exactly from the original!)

Nope - I have never heard this! I think ive given my little 'Alice' cucumber (and remains of my salad and veg) and she is still happy!! xxx

Iv never heard of cucumber being poisonous to hamsters. I think if anything eats too much of the same thing day in day out it can cause problems as it wont be a balanced diet.

I was once told at shcool that Bananas are poisoness - You just have to eat rather alot in one go!

I think it's all in moderation personally...i give my guineas cucumber but only a little. Every day they get a selection of different veg/fruit. Not the same thing every day, and not a lot of one thing.

Some people, especially those that post on these pet-owner forums it seems, do seem to take vegetable selection/toxicity quite seriously!

I've had rabbits for over 20 years & have always fed them lettuce with no problems whatsoever!

hav looked into this-------- they can be eaten by hamsters but only as occaisonal treat same probs as lettuce if given all the time!!

I've never heard it but is it maybe along the same line of why you shouldn't give rabbits lettuce and cucumber?
