we have dangerous dog licences here in Spain. Good idea, but they change their minds all the time about which dogs are dangerous and there's so many forms of paperwork they always change.... its a bit of a pest which means most dangerous dog owners take the risk not to do it! However vet practices are not legally allowed to vaccinate or microchip dangerous dogs without a licence! vicious circle!

I'm sooo pleased to see that dog ownership is starting to be taken seriously by Defra - as stated above it could prove hard to monitor and enforce but at least its getting some attention on the matter. I think it should be against the law for a child under the age of 16 years to be in control of a dog on their own? We have so many dog owners bringing their dogs in that have been attacked by a dog in the hands of a child/teenager and they just run off! Or am I being too harsh? Anyway its all good - a must for dog licenses and breeder licenses I think too.

Shakira I think you are off on a tangent there but I get the point....and as for A-J because people break the law is that a reason not to have laws??????

I really do think alot of these problems are down to owners but also the breeders of these animals, it should be restricted, due to teh credit crunch selling puppies is easy money, there are too many in rescue homes and too many being bred, I have a staffie and he is amazing a stray.There needs to be law and regualations on breeding as litrally any one is allowed to breed, potentailly causing more medical problems etc...ahh what a nightmare!!!xx

this is a very good idea, they should get veterinary practices and re-homing centres involved- people should have to present their licences when either re-homing, coming to the vets or putting thir dog up for re-homing. Police + local dog wardens should also be able to do on the spot checks + HEAVY duty fines should be put in place!!

hmmm in theory yes but how would it be enforced afterall look how many people go around driving without a licence or insurance etc

I agree I think its a good idea. I think it is a good idea to involve paying to own a dog hopefully it would stop people from having too many pets and make them consider properly before having a dog.

i agree with this, but wonder exactly how it will be enforced? also i dont think many people will be stumping up 60 quid! - but might reduce the numbers needing charity tx if it ever came to pass

I totally agree.....but if not a competency test then at least bring back Licences for Dog Owners.
