I have a quick query. I qualified as a vet nurse in 2005 (I think) and regularly paid my annual fee to the RCVS, so I could be a listed RVN, whilst I was working in practice. Last year I started teaching animal management related things, not nursing stuff, and now I am studying for a degree at University.

I have not paid my fee to the RCVS for the last 2 years so have been taken off the register, this is fine, although during my summer and christmas holidays I like to do a bit of locumming, where do I stand? Paying the fee on a yearly basis for a few weeks work here and there is not something I can afford. Surely because I am qualified I am able to practice but just not do schedule 3 procedures? I know some places like the Blue Cross and Vets Now won't take on locums unless they are listed and registered, reason being that I would not be able to do the schedule 3 and this is I understand.

I am just worried that I am doing something illegal or derogatory to the profession by locuming as a qualified but not as a listed and registered? Has anyone else been in this situation?

Securing payment for veterinary services

10. A client is the person who requests veterinary attention for an animal, for example when a veterinary surgeon is called to the scene of a road traffic accident by the police or by the RSPCA, the organisation in question will be liable to pay for any emergency treatment and for the call out even if the animal owner is subsequently identified (because the owner had no opportunity to consent to treatment). This applies equally to any member of the general public taking in a stray or injured animal whose owner is unknown.

from: http://www.rcvs.org.uk/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=89741&int2ndParentNodeID=89737&int1stParentNodeID=89642

I am due to have a baby at the end of june, and due to estimated childcare costs have requested flexi time, i am a night nurse and usually start at 6pm - 8.30am, as hubbi is also a vet (and so would have to wait for him to get home !) I requested a start time of 10pm.

within 48 hours of requesting I have had a "No" reply, siting that taking on a part time member of staff and using the current nursing rota that it is not practical.

having mentioned it to some of my ellow day staff they are keen to do 4 hours extra once a week to cover the hours and give them some extra money.

i dont feel that all options have been explored by the company and so flexi time regulations have not been closely followed.

should i appeal and hows the best way to go about it ?, i am due to finish work on the 8th of june.

Does anyone knoe if this is correct?

I have looked on the HMRC website and it seems to be just information for employers, not employees.

He turned up at work in Feb wearing just a chain but no tag or chip. I called the dog warden, rescue centres, and all the vets within abou a 30 mile radius but nobody had reported him. We kept him at the practice for a week before I took him home in case anyone came forward but nope. Now I've decided to keep him I'm worried that someone will see us out walking and say "that's my dog". Where do I stand in that situation? Is he now legally mine or do I have to hand him over if an owner appears?

vaccination certificates

Does anyone know if a receptionist or a vn can sign a vaccination certificate on behalf of a vet if the client brings the certificate in if they have forgotten to bring to booster appt or need duplicate certificates for kennels/cattery etc??

We sometimes sign and pp the vets name below. not sure that this is allowed or not?

Now its such a grey area, what defines schedule 3? I was under the impression that it was things like cat castrates and lumpectomies but dont want to say I havent done it if things like placing cannulae etc are schedule 3. Hope that makes sense?

It also asks about dental then schedule 3 dental and andschedule 3 drugs. Am I being a total dunce? I tohught nurses were not allowed to do extractions, I am assuming this is whats meant by schedule 3 dental?
