It's National Pet Month's 20th anniversary. This year the theme is: 'Healthy Pets Make Happy Pets' to tie in with the current social trend for improving human health and wellbeing, and the government's Change4Life Campaign.

National Pet Month will be extending its efforts to generate public awareness and raise funds for numerous UK pet charities in 2009. This year's activities include a photographic exhibition at the Ultimate Pet Show and Wet Nose Day will return as a mass dog walk in London on Sunday 19^th April, which, the charity hopes, will act as a spur for other supporters to run similar events throughout the UK.

National Pet Month relies on pet lovers to hold events and raise funds for national and local animal charities. But the month is also an important opportunity for veterinary practices, pet shops, country stores and pharmacies - indeed all pet-related businesses - to promote their valuable services to pet owners, and for animal charities themselves to rally support.

Organised by Intervet / Schering Plough, National Vaccination Month aims to highlight the need for vaccination among the nation's cat, dog, rabbit and horse owners.

According to the company, current estimates suggest more than half of all cats and dogs and 90% of rabbits are not currently vaccinated against a range of serious diseases.

VN Week is fast approaching: Are you ready?

Sunday 19th to Saturday 25th July 2009

VN Week kicks off on Saturday 19th July at Southsea Common’s Castle Field in Portsmouth & Roundhay Park in Leeds where there will be a team of veterinary nurses including BVNA representatives on hand to provide the public with advice on pet healthcare and to promote the veterinary nursing profession.

There will also be an event held at the CLA Game Fair in Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th July. The CLA Game Fair is the world’s biggest country sport and countryside show and is a great three day event for all the family to enjoy. There will be a number of BVNA events running up and down the country but we also need your help! We want veterinary nurses to be proud of their profession and help us by promoting veterinary nursing as a profession by getting involved. With your involvement we are able to get the word out to the general public on how important your role is in the veterinary practice and how important you are!

You could hold a fund raising event like car or even dog washing, sponsored dog walking, free health checks in the practice, displays in your reception, hold open days in practice, anything to promote your profession. Plus, if you take part and get involved you could be in with a chance of winning some fabulous prizes.

So what are you waiting for..........get planning and become part of the nationwide campaign to shout the word about your profession!

On Thursday 1 October RCVS will also be holding a Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) ‘surgery’ for practices who are thinking of joining the Scheme, need some help with an upcoming inspection or simply want a one-to-one chat with the Chairman of the Scheme or an inspector. The ‘surgery’ will be held between 11am-5pm also at the Lincoln Hotel, Lincoln city centre, and you can book a free 45 minute appointment by contacting Debbie Dowden on 020 7202 0773 or d.dowden@rcvs.org.uk.

Veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, practice managers and others involved in the profession are all invited to the meeting to debate current issues affecting the veterinary profession. RCVS President Professor Sandy Trees, who is originally from Lincolnshire, will be chairing the meeting. He will be joined by the Officer team and VN Council member Josephine Yates to answer questions from the floor.

The meeting will be held in the Lincoln Room at the Lincoln Hotel, in the city centre. Guests are invited to join colleagues for a drink and a bite to eat from 6:30pm, followed by Question Time at 7:15pm.

Questions are welcome on any veterinary issue and topics are expected to include veterinary legislation, VN regulation and training and 24-hour cover. The meeting will finish at approximately 10:00pm.
